In today’s world, our phones have become an extension of ourselves. We check them instinctively, scroll endlessly, and feel anxious when they’re out of reach. While technology has its benefits, our constant connectivity comes at a cost, disrupting our sleep, increasing stress, and pulling us away from meaningful, in-person connections. But what if you could take a break? What if stepping away from screens could deepen your faith and allow you to truly reconnect with God?

The Good News Cruise provides the perfect opportunity for a digital detox, replacing notifications with nature, stress with stillness, and mindless scrolling with mindfulness. Whether you’re traveling solo, or with your significant other, unplugging at sea can be a powerful experience of renewal.

How to Stay Off Your Phone on a Cruise

Unplugging isn’t always easy, especially when we’re so used to reaching for our phones out of habit. Here are a few simple ways to resist the urge and make the most of your digital detox:

1.       Turn Off Notifications – Before boarding, silence app alerts and set your phone to “Do Not Disturb.” This removes the temptation to check in constantly.

2.       Limit Social Media Access – Consider deleting social media apps for the duration of your cruise of logging out to make checking them more difficult.

3.       Use a Real Camera – Instead of using your phone for photos, if available to you, bring a camera. This keeps you from going onto your phone and getting sucked into other distractions.

4.       Replace Scrolling with Scripture – When you feel the urge to pick up your phone, open a devotional or Bible instead. Let scripture fill the spaces where social media once was.

5.       Engage in Face-to-Face Connection – Use your time at sea to build deeper relationships. Talk to your travel companions, meet new people, and engage in faith-based discussions.

6.       Immerse yourself in Nature – Whether it’s watching the sunrise over the ocean, stargazing at night, or feeling the sea breeze on your face, let nature be your reminder of God’s presence.

Returning Renewed

When the cruise ends and you return to everyday life, the challenge is to carry that sense of peace and presence with you. Set boundaries with your phone by setting time limits on social media apps and prioritizing real-life interactions over virtual ones. Remember that life is meant to be lived in the present, not through a screen.

Choosing to unplug is an act of faith. It’s trusting that the world will keep turning without your constant input and that God’ presence is stronger than any digital connection. So set sail, leave the distractions behind, and rediscover what truly matters: your faith, your relationships, and the simple beautiful moments of life.
